<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Itâs important as you age, but also important at any age.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>At this time of the year, when people make all kind of resolutions, one of the most frequent is to improve our state of health in one way or another. </p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>This can also include keeping our brainâs healthy.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p> Here is a list of actions you can take, and make part of your life to assure your brain stays in the best of shape.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Step 1 &#8211; Eat a Brain-Healthy Diet. </p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>What is a brain-healthy diet? </p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>It is one that is rich in omega-3 fatty acids (commonly found in fish, specially fed chicken (via their eggs) some fruits and vegetables), essential amounts of proteins only, plentiful antioxidants (found in a host of natural foods) lots of fruits and vegetables, foods rich in vitamin B (such as lentils); minimum amounts or no trans fats; and fiber-rich non-processed carbohydrates. </p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Step 2 &#8211; Stay Mentally Active</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Every year resolve to learn something new. Let it be a language, a skill, some dance, something new each year. Keep your mind active. </p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Stay away from TV as much as you can, and replace it with the computer. </p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Take classes in something, and read as much as you can. The brain needs this stimuli to maintain its cognitive levels.</p>

<p>Step 3 &#8211; Exercise Regularly</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Nothing is as important for the body and brain as regular exercise. </p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Regular exercise always increases circulation, improves one coordination, and helps prevent conditions that increase the risk of dementia such as heart disease, stroke and diabetes. </p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Step 4 â Remain Socially Active</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Do not remain a recluse. Be with your friends, become a volunteer and work with people, take regular outings to new places, and new countries. Let your eyes see new sights, your ears new sounds, taste new foods. </p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Step 5 â Sleep Well</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>The healthy brain needs for your body to sleep and rest. When you are deprived of enough sleep, the brain suffers. </p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Step 6 â Stress Management</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Simple stress is often healthful, but long protracted stress puts the brain (and body via the immune system) at increased risk. </p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>There are wonderful ways to manage your stress, such as yoga, enjoyable hobbies, regular journeys to spas, healthful massage, and a host of other options. Use them, and let the stress pass away from you.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Step 7 â Safety</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Donât take chances. </p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>The damage an injury to the head cannot be under-estimated, especially triggering the onset of dementia.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Step 8 â Watch Your General Health</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Keep a healthy weight, control high-blood pressure, hypertension, and guard against diabetes. </p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Each of these can negatively affect your cognitive state.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Step 9 â Avoid Unhealthful Habits</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>If you smoke, stop now. </p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>If you over drink stop, and limit yourself of moderate amounts of wine, and an occasional drink. </p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Illegal drugs of any kind will negatively affect your cognitive state, and surely hasten the onset of dementia. </p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Step 10 â Genetic Disposition</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>If there is any history of dementia, or other cognitive diseases in your family, you can take steps before it become too late. </p>
<p>&#13;</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Weight loss is all about burning more calories than you eat, but what&#8217;s the best way to do that? Knowing the basics of how to lose weight, how to exercise for weight loss and how to motivate yourself are essential for creating a program that works for you.</p>
<p>If you&#8217;ve ever tried to lose weight, you know it can be a difficult process. But, there are ways to make it easier. Understanding exactly what you need to do to lose weight is your first step<br />Despite what you may think, losing weight isn&#8217;t a mysterious process. In fact, weight loss doesn&#8217;t even have to involve strange diets, special exercises or even the &#8216;magic&#8217; of pills or fitness gadgets. Want the secret to weight loss? Make small changes each and every day and you&#8217;ll slowly (but surely) lose those extra pounds.</p>
<p>Rules of Weight Loss</p>
<p>To lose one pound, you must burn approximately 3500 calories  over and above what you already burn doing daily activities.<br /> 1.  Calculate your BMR  (basal metabolic rate). Your BMR is what your body needs to maintain normal functions like breathing, digestion, etc.<br /> 2. Calculate your activity level. Use a calorie calculator to figure out how many calories you burn while sitting, standing, exercising, lifting weights, etc. throughout the day.<br /> 3. Keep track of how many calories you eat. Use a food journal to add up what you eat and drink during the day. If you&#8217;re eating less calories than you&#8217;re burning, you&#8217;ll lose weight. </p>
<p>Setting weight loss goals is probably one of the more difficult things to do when you embark on an exercise and/or diet program. How much do you need to lose? </p>
<p>That question is hard to answer and often based on your particular goals. If you&#8217;re losing weight for your health, your goal might be more modest, say 5-10% of your current weight. But what if you have something more specific in mind like a certain clothing-size you want to fit into? How do you set a reasonable goal for yourself?</p>
<p>The key to setting weight loss goals is to follow the standard of goal setting. It needs to be specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and tangible. Your first step is determining if you really need to lose weight.</p>
<p>Do You Need to Lose Weight?</p>
<p>If you talk to most people, you&#8217;ll probably find that everyone feels like they need to lose weight, even people who appear to be at a healthy weight. Often our weight loss goals are based on what we think we should look like rather than what&#8217;s reasonable for our bodies right now. </p>
<p>In general, a candidate for weight loss may have the following characteristics:</p>
<p> * A BMI of more than 25<br /> * A Waist-Hip ratio of higher than .8 for women and higher than 1.0 for men<br /> * An Abdominal Girth measurement of more than 35 inches in women and 40 inches in men </p>
<p>Of course, those aren&#8217;t the only clues that tell us we need to lose weight. There are those annoying indications like tight clothes, getting out of breath doing simple activities, or stepping on a scale for the first time in awhile. But, before you set goals based on what you think you should weigh, make sure you really need to lose weight.</p>
<p>Set Your Goals</p>
<p>If you&#8217;ve determined you do need to lose weight, your next step is to set a reasonable weight loss goal for yourself. You can base your goals on any number of  factors, but a great place to start would be the general recommendations set out by the American College of Sports Medicine which are 5-10% of body weight or one to two pounds per week.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Healthy weight loss is not some magical, mysterious plan that is available to a certain few.  Many of us know that weight loss is a process which requires a lot of work and discipline and you need to be really serious about getting it done, still it seem to be the major focus of the many people nowadays.  Weight loss is also challenging but is not impossible at all, and little encouragement and motivation can do wonders.  But remember that maintaining weight loss is much harder than losing weight because your body has made metabolic adjustments and all the brain does is think about food. There has to be change in this area too, but if you stick to your plan, old habits will be replaced with new ones and the body and its chemistry will follow suit.</p>
<p>Exercise</p>
<p>Exercise is one of the best things you can do for weight loss, keeping in mind that exercise program must be suitable to one&#8217;s body, as others are not able to exercise as rigorously as others can.  Exercise alone, without concomitant dietary caloric restriction and behavior modification, tends to produce only modest weight loss of 3-5 lbs.  But as we know, it’s never bad or too late to exercise, and it plays a more vital function than to just help you achieve &#8220;Weight Loss&#8221;.</p>
<p>Health</p>
<p>People lose weight because they want to feel healthier, look better or have more energy.  A description of a healthy person is the one who eat right type and right quantity of food and who consumes it too with physical activity.  Sound easy… but the habits we have developed and the incorrect emphasis on career over health in the modern world produce opposite and negative results. But this a battle of willpower and in fact, losing even 5 to 10 percent of your weight can help greatly improve your health and from there it is much easier to continue.  Whatever your goals, successful weight loss and healthy weight management CAN be yours.  However, you have to bear in mind that you cannot lose too much otherwise you are just trying to risk your own health and even life in some cases.</p>
<p>Healthy eating is not the same as weight-loss eating: &#8220;Weight loss is about being calorie and portion conscious.</p>
<p>Foods</p>
<p>Foods such as fruits and vegetables have low &#8220;energy density&#8221;.  Recognize what is causing the weight gain: usually overeating or eating a poor combination of foods.  Eating out too much: If your busy schedule or desire for convenience has you eating out most of the time, you have very little control over the foods you consume.  My advice is to eat lots of proper meals and healthy foods and exercise: then you&#8217;ll feel good and look good.  Prof Ben Fletcher and Dr Karen Pine say that dieting leads women into a vicious circle of negative emotions which provokes cravings for the very foods they are trying to avoid, with chocolate one of the most powerful. </p>
<p>Weight maintenance is much like weight loss, because the principles are the same: Eat healthy foods, control your portion sizes and exercise regularly.   Self-prepared foods emphasizing fruits, vegetables, grains and low-fat proteins accompanied by guidelines governing selection and preparation analysis of food labeling, has to become your daily routine.  Keep away from fried foods especially deep-fried as this contains a great amount of fat.  While most diets focus on foods you shouldn&#8217;t eat, those that emphasize adding low-calorie foods, like fruits and vegetables, can promote healthy weight loss.</p>

<p>There are so many weight loss programs now available that one has so many choices that it can be difficult to decide which one will actually work.  Good weight loss programs allow one to shed excess weight safely and healthily over a long period of time.  Weight loss programs are also offered by various fitness companies which also provide the health fitness diets and the workout for a limited period of time.  Prescription weight loss drugs are intended for individuals with medically significant weight problems, and are intended to be used in conjunction with dietary, behavioral, and exercise programs.  Each and everyone&#8217;s body metabolism reacts differently to different fast weight loss programs and plans.  Lifestyle changes including exercise programs, such as walking, tai chi, aqua aerobics and circuit training, coupled with behavior modification, can help with weigh management.</p>
<p>Success</p>
<p>While there are no hard-and-fast rules that work for everyone, there are ways to maximize your success.  A strategy for success begins with getting realistic: &#8220;Cause number-one for failure is setting too unrealistic of goals, losing too much too fast.  While trimming that waistline may seem a solo job, the truth is that friends can have an enormous influence on the success or failure of attempt at weight loss.  To be successful it seems that you need a good program, supporting friends and have to know what the latest research studies have uncovered and be able to apply this information to your daily routine.</p>

<p>There are many ways to instill healthy eating habits in our youngsters.  Letting kids help in the preparation and clean up of meals will boost their self esteem and show them that healthy food can taste good, also.  Take them to local farmers markets so they can feel a sense of community and see that food isn’t only sold in supermarkets.  Replace plastic “play” food replicas of donuts and cookies with fruits and vegetables.  </p>

<p>Awhile back, I sat for 3 children and the mother would correspond a specific dinner to each day of the week.  Some of the meals consisted of pea soup, hamburger helper, and pesto angel hair pasta which they referred to as “green spaghetti.”  Needless to say, supper time was a constant up hill battle.  It was me against them with strict orders from the matriarch to force feed the children.  I could never bring myself to do that, instead I would discard of the food somehow (that will remain a mystery).  Their mother and her children could have benefited from the following tips.  </p>

<p>Serve your children small child size portions, let them ask for seconds, and don’t rush them through eating.  If they refuse to eat dinner, it’s OK, simple give them a nutritional snack later on.  Serve a variety of foods to prevent them from getting bored easily.  Make sure the meals are visually pleasing so they will want to chow down.  Kid’s stomachs are small, so serve wholesome snacks in between meals.  Also, don’t push too many healthy foods on them as they will deviate as soon as they leave the house.  It is human nature to want something you can’t get.  Meal time habits you create now will lead to a lifetime of healthier choices.  </p>

When people get actively involved with something, they more often than not come to appreciate it more and are more receptive to it. The same can be said for our children. So the more you get them involved with all aspects of food the better. They can help with things like growing, preparation and cooking.</p>
<p>If you have an allotment great or if you have an area set aside in your garden for planting then you will have a good place to start. Just getting them involved in planting, nurturing or picking will hopefully increase their interest and that is all that is needed for healthy eating. Even if they do the minimum like watering a part of your produce it is worth it. To see them realise the crop growing from a seed to food for the table will be priceless.</p>
<p>Once the crop is ready to be picked then helping with this process should again keep their interest in the process. I must state that you should try and give them something they can see as quickly as possible. And then try and make sure that they have something to pick on a regular basis so use as many different crops as possible.</p>
<p>After the crops are picked and you begin to prepare them for use in your kitchen you should get your kids involved in preparing a meal and eating it once it has been complete, I will give you some ideas on this later. It will definitely taste a lot better than any processed food.</p>
<p>It will not take much to do a small area for your personal crops and it will save you money. If you go a step further and decide to video the process it will be something you can show family and friends to give the kids added satisfaction and recognition of their achievement.</p>
<p>Why not hide the food you want your children to eat with in their normal food. Here is an example you can add half a shredded onion to a coleslaw whether you buy it or make it yourself. Another example is shedding carrots to add to mashed potatoes. Why not try a soup and packing it with lots of other goodies. You can do this kind of thing for all sorts of food and the kids will not realise and just ask for more.</p>
<p>The younger you do this idea of getting them involved with all the stages of food and using some of the ways to hide foods they think they do not like then you are well on your way to healthy eating practices.</p>
